Ghosts of memories undone

I'd been wanting to try and find a way to use more sustainable materials in my work, so I experimented with making my own inks from natural materials that are readily available in the surrounding habitat. These pieces come together using imagery from walks in the landscape and materials made from that very same environment.

The oak galls were gathered on the Beara Peninsula whilst I was doing a residency in 2022 and then made into an ink almost a year later.

The corn marigolds were gathered from a neighbours garden and made into an ink.

Both these inks have been mixed with a copper ink and a rust ink that I've had on the go for about 2 years.

Like memories, the colours of these inks may change with time - this is the nature of natural inks and memory.

Photography collage, quink ink, oak gall ink, corn marigold ink on watercolour paper.

Undercurrents

Spaces for stories to emerge and reveal themselves.

These mixed media pieces are made using encaustic wax, pigments and photography. Using the encaustic wax and pigments to build up layers and then adding a mix of my own photographs or found photography I create a space for stories to emerge.

Soft Days

Days when a sense of otherworldliness lingers in the air - when objects and thoughts can seem ill defined and elusive ,existing somewhere in between the foggy mist.

In Ireland 'It's a soft day' is an expression that is used to describe the weather and, in particular, a specific type of misty rain that is persistent, hazy and almost invisible that occurs on an overcast day that is neither warm nor cold.

Watercolour, photograph on tissue paper, encaustic and pigments mounted and framed

Peripheral Terrains

Peripheral Terrains is a series of pieces inspired by the edges of landscapes in and around West Cork and Kerry.

Each piece pays homage to the striking beauty of these places and speaks of the quiet and powerful contemplation that comes from being immersed in these landscapes.
